     Tall Tales & Other Musings

A collection of stories, tales, observations, and ramblings by Bruce and his friends.

The Awakening

Spring is definitely at the arrival gate and with it comes the awakening of every fly fisherman's heart. At work we stare out the window and see sparkling water splashing over sun warmed rocks. We dream of female Black Caddis returning to the water to deposit eggs, Blue Winged Olives hatching on the surface of smooth pools, and the slow motion unfurling of wings of the slightly larger Blue Quills.

On the water it is even better. The dreams become reality. Amid the Mayflies reawakening are the steady rise forms of Brown Trout with their butter yellow bellies and gorgeous vermilion spotted flanks. In the riffles we find molten silver Rainbows with their trademark crimson slash on each flank.

Hiking back into the headwaters of many streams brings you to native Brook Trout rising with slashing vigor to these same hatching flies. The dark green vermiculated backs, the cerulean haloed spotted flanks make this the most beautiful fish in fresh, and possibly, any water.

For the next 3 to 4 weeks the fishing is indeed very good. Take advantage of this annual opportunity to experience the very soul of fly-fishing. Now you must excuse me. I know this stream where on sunny afternoons, like today, flies rise, fish follow, and I shall not be far behind.
